CQ CQ,
The dog days of summer are coming to an end soon, school has started for most folks and time to start looking ahead to Fall activities. Summerfest was a great event and appears to have been well attended. We had a great ARRL forum session with Dr. Woolweaver and special speaker ARRL Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager Dave Patton, NN1N. Most of the other forums appeared to be well attended also.
I would also like to thank everyone for their efforts. It takes a lot of volunteers and presenters to make the event as successful as it is and you are all very appreciated for contributing. Thank You!
Fall begin a series of hamfests, contests and other events. It would be hard not to find something happening that involves your particular interests in the hobby, so stay involved and I look forward to seeing you at many of them.
Club News:
Ham radios help during hurricane season
From Montgomery County - When the power was out in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike almost two years ago, amateur radio, also called ham radio, provided crucial communication for emergency services like FEMA. And during this new hurricane season, it will be there again.
Responsible for ham radio in this area is the local club Texas Emergency Amateur Communicators, or TEAC, a group of about 70 members who use their hobby to serve the community during emergencies when all other communications fail. For more of this story, click on or type the URL below:

Ken, KD2KW, our Affiliated Club Coordinator, would like to hear about any special events, club programs or interesting activities from the club officers in our section and will put these on the www.arrlstx.org web page under the ACC link. Email Ken at his callsign @ arrl.net
STX ARES News:
September marks the 75th Anniversary of ARES:
ARES is celebrating its 75th Anniversary starting in September. The ARRL is formally celebrating the anniversary through December of this year. The anniversary celebrates the history and, more importantly, the relevance of ARES® in today’s world. From its early beginning ARES has grown to the Premier Amateur Radio emergency communication support organization in the world.
Annual SET Coming up in October:
October is also when ARES organizations traditionally hold their Annual Simulated Emergency Tests, or SET. Due to the significance of the 75th Anniversary of ARES, Tom Whiteside, N5TW, the Section Emergency Coordinator is working with the South Texas Section Public Information Coordinator (PIC) to maximize the opportunities for media coverage. The ARRL has produced postcards and news releases that will be sent to major media outlets in the section. A coordinated message of the history, service and relevance of the ARES® program will be theme.
This is an opportunity to showcase and pay tribute to the members of ARES® for their commitment and service. The South Texas Section is a leader in emergency communications and service during times of disasters. All District Emergency Coordinators, Emergency Coordinators, members and public information officers are encouraged to support and promote this 75th anniversary. For those wishing to download the anniversary logo, please visit: http://www.arrl.org/ares-anniversary.
For more information on participation in your area, please contact your local ARES® Emergency Coordinator or Public Information Officer.
As a former EC for several years I know that SET’s can be a hard thing for many ARES groups to get their hands around. It takes a lot of time and effort to decide on a viable scenario, plan the exercise, write the test scripts, determine the objectives to be achieved, find someone to observe and validate those achievements and then have a productive after action hot wash. SET’s are an important part of training and preparedness for ARES groups. We should be conducting several throughout the year, each with a focus on improving some aspect of our skill needs.
Tom and I are committed to helping you succeed in any way we can. Please do not hesitate to contact either of us.

Final Thoughts for the month:
I thought this an interesting and somewhat humorous quote -
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.” - Robert Heinlein
